Artist's Comments

This probably took a lot longer to make than it looks. I started with an ink drawing which I scanned and further inked digitally until I could get the shadows and stuff to a point where I could be satisfied with them. I work entirely too slow.

This is my design of a character conceived by Thweatted. I was inspired to draw her again after seeing Doodlibop's awesome rendition of her, so I actually referenced her's rather than my own drawings to make this. I liked the way she drew the clothing better.

It's easy to call this look the Frank Miller noir style, but he's really not who I'm aspiring for when I try this heavy shadow stuff. My personal favorite artist to work like this is Al Williamson, who managed to absolutly perfect this look in his later years. His black-and-white transposition is so clean and describes form so perfectly that it boggles my mind. I really like Tim Bradstreet for this too.

I definatly thought of Sin City when I saw this. I love the expression on her face, it's wicked.

Kudos to you for brilliant use of contrast. Expression is amazing - I'm in awe from the teeth. (I can't draw teeth to save myself.) Great job!

I understand entirely, I always have to labor away to get the teeth to look...not horrible. I'm immensely grateful to the Japanese for developing so many nice shortcuts for drawing teeth in anime. Thx for the comps!

Maybe I should've added that trademark Miller B&W rain effect. I think I tend to make girls look way scarier than I mean to. But I'm glad you like it!

This is awesome. It really, really kicks ass. I like how you used the hatching very sparingly. The balance of detail, light and shadow is great. And lots of atmosphere.

And you got that shiny thing kind of going on too.

I'm not familiar with those 2 artists. I'll have to google them. This older looking Isabelle seems more sinister than ever. I can't imagine this in color. It was meant for black and white. Thanks for doing another kick-butt drawing of her. Candy for the eyes.

Tim Bradstreet is the guy who does almost every cover of Punisher, so if you've seen a Punisher comic in the last four or five years, you've probably seen his work. Williamson is an old EC Comics artist who later did work for Marvel, DC, and some others.
I don't think I intended for Isabelle to look quite this old or sinister, but that's just what came out. Heavy shadows always do that. Oh well.

It seems more rewarding to me to try and find a good solution using solid blacks before resorting to hatching, otherwise the whole page is filled with lines and it can get messy. But sometimes a tiny bit of hatching is all you really need.

Indeed.
