Murky by mallaard Murky by mallaard
Between all the Joe Mad! comics I've been reading and all the Mighty Mouse cartoons I've been watching, I had a strong urge to draw something more cartoony and dynamic than usual. And I'd been meaning to draw this angry little man for a while anyway.

For those out of the know, this is Murky, one of the main badguys from the old Rainbow Brite cartoon. What's interesting is, when I was studying the reference picture I realize that this guy has elements of both Mario and Sonic to him, and he came before either of those two were fully developed.

He once killed a man in Reno just to watch him die. Swear to God. OK that probably isn't true. What is true is that the actor who did Murky's voice is the same guy who did, and currently does, the voice for Optimus Prime. I poop you not, check out IMDB.

I think a lot more kids would have found him frightening had he looked like this on the show. :XD: Awesome work, this is epic. :D

Well I wouldn't want him to be frightening, but with a more zany and crazed appearance it could be interesting.

Good point! Some of the things in the show, looking back, were already disturbing enough for a kids' show, I think. I mean for one thing, how did Wisp become an orphan in the first place? Did her parents die or was she abandoned? Sorry, I tend to over-analyze stuff - I could go on all day, so I'll stop now. :XD:

I forgot who Wisp was, but I definitely remember the name. I love the look and feel of the Star Stealer movie, it's covers such a wide spectrum of classic 80s bright and bubbly versus cold and hard-edged looks.

Wisp was Rainbow Brite's original name before she became Rainbow Brite. In the two-parter "The Beginning of Rainbowland", it mentions in the beginning that she's an orphan (presumably from Earth), and the episodes revolve around her being sent on the mission to restore the place to its original state, pretty much. :) So looking back, I always wonder how she became an orphan in the first place, which if you think about it too much, can be pretty disturbing.

I agree about the Star Stealer movie, I actually appreciate the style it was done in. And the sound effects are awesome. :D

Nice variety of marks, man! The thicker, wavy part inside the cape is beautiful.

Thank you! And thanks for the journal feature as well! Besides the aforementioned Joe Madureira influence going into this, a lot of times I also think about Kelly Jones and his handling of graphic B&W art, particularly when it comes to capes. Like here:

He looks awesome. Like the kind of villain who would try to blow up the ocean if he could.

He never seemed to be much into wanton devastation. His thing was mainly making every and everyone drab and gloomy. But, you know, there's something to be said about keeping your goals modest.

Hm that is true. Sometimes it's nice just to accomplish something, even if it's nothing amazing or brilliant, or diabolical. Still, I can't understand the motivation to take all the color out of the world. What exactly is the pay off?

I don't know what kind of payoff you'd get from making everything murky, but he's a Rainbow Brite villain so you can't expect too much malevolence from him. You can't exactly have R.B. fighting Unicron or someone.

True. Still seems like they could have made his goals slightly more evil. Like me maybe he could sell the colors back to people at ridiculous prices or something.

Thanks! I try to make the linework interesting without getting too fussy and confusing, so I felt pretty good about this drawing.

I only learned about the character a week a two ago from reading this ridiculous book called TURMOIL IN THE TOYBOX about how toys are turning our kids from the Lord. Nice one.

Murky DOES wanna turn you away from the Lord, just look at him! Then he wants you to steal Christmas.

That's because Easter was already hijacked by the Bunny and Cadbury.

Yup! Peter Cullen was indeed a member of the Rainbow Brite cast. So many people find this hard to believe.

Either way, this is quite the epic pic of Murky. He looks far more sinister than I remember! lol
