St. Louis Arch by mallaard St. Louis Arch by mallaard
I was surprised when my work asked the employees for submissions for a sketch competition based on the St. Louis Arch. I suppose it has something to do with a branch office there or something, and I waited until the very last moment to decide to participate. I did this last night, obviously using a couple pieces of photo reference. I went with a sort of Al Williamson graphic B&W look because it was quicker, plus I thought the Arch lent itself to that treatment.

Very nice, my friend. You captured the beauty of St. Louis. Now I'm even more excited to move back to the city I was born in.

I love the simplicity of this one. It could be a pumpkin pattern.

Wow, you're right, it really could! I'd lose some of the cloud stuff if I were to do that, but otherwise it should work. Glad you like it!

That looks good man. I really like the way you did the clouds.

I wanted something to carry a strong diagonal swoosh throughout the image so that's what I did with the clouds. I only wish I had made them a little more consistent in their angle, and I think it's a little too fussy near the middle.

I see both your points, but I didn't really notice either till you pointed them out. Probably nothing to really worry about. It's a strong, clean.

This is incredibly well done! It's fascinating how you manage to create an impression like this with only two colours. The sky is my favourite part!

Thank you! The sky is the only part I really invented in this, the rest is worked up from photos. I just translated the details into as simple a black and white format as I could, it still took forever to fill in the black spaces. Of course I was using a .7 pen so I can only blame myself.

Lovely, iconic work; I haven't heard Al Williamson's name mentioned in a long time...

It's a darn shame about that too, big daddy Al is magnificent. FYI, there's a new collection of his Flash Gordon strips coming out in February you might wanna keep an eye out for.

And thanks for the comps!

Thanks, I think it's a corporate-wide thing. Hopefully there won't be some master painter in another branch entering the contest. I might update the description if I hear back on it.

it wouldn't have been the same if it were black and white.

Thanks, I agree, I tried making it totally black on screen and it was just overwhelming. Knocking it back even a tiny bit makes it easier to look at.

Glad you like. It's fun picking and choosing what to make black and white out of a photograph, although I wish I had given the clouds a more consistent direction to swoosh in. I purposely made the borders rough and jagged so I wouldn't have to rule them straight, another trick I learned from Al Williamson's comics.
