Artist's Comments

This is the first of a small series of tarot card illustrations I created, of which only two are worth posting. This one is called the Fool, card number 0 in the tarot. He represents the impulsive nature of man to learn and better himself. He is naive and foolish, but his desire is great. This character is typically portrayed carrying a bag containing all his earthly possessions. These include a sword, a cup, a wand, and a pentacle, which are the four suits of the tarot deck. The Magician, the next card up, will explain to the Fool how these possessions represent the elements of the soul and mind. Since these items are symbolic, I decided to internalize the Fool's bag of possessions as his own head, which he carries over his shoulder. The large eye with the crown at top is the goal, enlightenment, which he may or may not achieve. The large snake, in alchemy symbolism, represents wisdom.
